It’s a week before Christmas, and Day 18’s wine, Nightfall is a Spanish Monastrell (aka Mourvedre) that is nice for celebrating the evening with friends. Nightfall is a full-bodied red wine with aromas of black cherry, spice and leather. With such potent aromas you may expect the wine to be a powerhouse, and it is one, but surprisingly easy to drink. The tannins are soft, allowing the black cherry and raspberry flavors to shine on the palate, along with notes of cedar. The cedar continues on to the finish and rounds it out nicely without becoming too bitter.
Costco recommends enjoying this evening wine with bold dishes like lamb meatballs, lasagna or beer braised bratwurst. I didn’t have any of those dishes but I did have a homemade pepperoni, sausage and mushroom pizza which paired beautifully. If you are looking for a red wine that’s solid, yet easy to drink, with a soft tannin structure that doesn’t weigh down your palate, Nightfall is one to keep in mind.
