Wine: 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon, from the Holiday Sweater Collection
Winery: American Vintners (Lodi, California)
Cheese: Ilchester Cheddar
This Cabernet Sauvignon is not only the first wine on the Advent Calendar, it is also the first wine I’ve tried from American Vintners. And I gotta say, I like it. It is a very pleasant, easy drinking Cabernet. It’s very fruity, with black raspberry and even though the tasting description doesn’t mention it I detected a hint of cherry. It is also spicy, with notes of black pepper and a pleasant mouthfeel. For me the tannins are the star of the show. They are present, but not obnoxiously so. Rather they are silky and smooth, like satin sheets. Just how I like my reds. The body is full, finish is medium (I would have preferred a slightly longer finish), but pleasant. Overall I give it a 3.75 (A-). I originally gave it a 4.0 (A), but I downgraded it slightly due to the finish not being quite as long as I usually like in a Cabernet Sauvignon. But you can’t go wrong with this excellent wine.
(Pairs great with pizza!)
As far as the cheddar is concerned, it is very good with a medium sharpness. I confess I didn’t consider reviewing it when I tried it, but I liked it a lot. It had a nice, creamy texture. Off to a great start!
