2025 Wine Advent-ure: Day 23

Cavalys Sauvignon Blanc

Just one more day to go… For the penultimate day of Advent we have a Sauvignon Blanc from Cavalys, or to hear my wife put it, “great, another Sauvignon Blanc”. She’s not a fan of the wine, which is ironic considering she usually prefers whites to reds. Thing is, she doesn’t like grapefruit flavors and that is what Sauvignon Blancs are known for. Cavalys’ Sauvignon Blanc is no exception. Trademark flavors of grapefruit, tropical fruit and lemongrass on the palate. That said, the wine tasted more sour than fruity, almost like one of those sour candies you find in a candy aisle. Don’t get me wrong, the fruit was there, but I felt the tartness overwhelmed it a bit even for a Sauvignon Blanc. For me I would much prefer Cavalys Sauvignon Blanc as a pairing wine – especially with heavily creamy/fatty dishes, seafood or cheeses – as opposed to enjoying it solo. I just don’t know if it is fruity or complex enough to stand on its own. But that’s just me. And it’s not a knock on the wine itself. “Food” wines can be appreciated as well – not every wine has to be a diva.
