2025 Wine Advent-ure: Day 4

BDX Claret (Bordeaux)

For Day 4, we try a Bordeaux Claret, with the trendy name of “BDX”. Currant, black cherry and spice on the nose. The palate is black cherry and spice, however the tannins really dominate in this wine. I was surprised at just how prominent they were, aggressive to the point where they even dominate the finish, lasting long after the fruit has faded – my mouth felt like it was lined with cotton at the end. One may be tempted to say it has a long finish but considering that tannins are a large part of that, I would say otherwise. Now, don’t get me wrong, I actually enjoyed this wine, particularly the spiciness, but for me this wine is definitely more about the tannin structure, than the fruit. BDX is drinkable now, but I can imagine keeping it in the cellar for a while, get those tannins to mellow out and allow the cherry fruit and spice more room to shine.
