2025 Wine Advent-ure: Day 2

Cavalys Pinot Noir (VDNM Vineyards)

For Day 2, courtesy of Total Wines, we go to Chile. Today’s wine is Cavalys, a Pinot Noir from VDNM Vineyards.

The first thing that struck my wife and I about the wine when I poured it was the color – for some reason it was a little lighter than we expected for a Pinot Noir, a bright ruby, as opposed to the garnet we were expecting. Then again, Pinot Noirs come in a variety of shades of red, so it wasn’t too surprising. But the (relatively) light color was no indication of the wine’s flavor,- vanilla spice and red fruit, most notably cherry and strawberry. Interestingly enough I also caught a hint of tobacco on both the nose and the palate, which was something I expected in earthier reds. The tannins were supple and pleasant, not grippy. Acidity is medium to high, with a medium finish. Overall Cavalys has some depth and complexity to it, certainly more so than the rose’ . Some tasters have said it is a little on the sweet side. I didn’t think it was all that sweet, but there is a lot of red fruit in this. So if you are looking for more structure as opposed to fruit, you might want to try something else. But the balance works for me. Definitely a good wine to enjoy solo or with meats like beef or lamb.
