2024 Wine Advent-ure: Day 13

La Pluma Gewurztraminer (California)

Day 13’s wine is a California Gewurztraminer from the La Pluma label. It’s been an age since I had a Gewurztraminer, and I am not sure if I’ve ever tasted one from California. Most of the Gewurzes I had were from colder climate regions. So I went into this one not quite knowing what to expect.

I have to say, this is a nice example of the grape. The nose is abundant with aromas of lychee fruit, rose petals, lemon and herbs. Intense tropical fruit flavors of the aforementioned lychee and pineapple burst on the palate, supported gently by a honey undertone with a hint of ginger spice. There is enough acidity to prevent the wine being cloying (something I was concerned about with a warm weather Gewurztraminer) and the finish of fruit and honey is long lasting. Overall this Gewurztraminer is a balanced wine that hits all the right notes, one of my favorite wines in this Advent Calendar so far.
