La Pluma Brut (California)

On the second day of Advent we finally began our maiden voyage with “In Good Taste”, a “one stop wine shop” founded in 2020, dedicated to crafting and curating small bottle wine flights and advent calendars.
We start off with the first wine of the Calendar, a brut sparkling wine called “La Pluma”. Apparently, this is their first sparkling wine. Doubtless they introduced it on the First Day to kick off the Advent season. But how is it?
To say this is a Brut, I was surprised at just how fruity it is. Not only was the nose fruity, (almost tropical with the pineapple and melon) but the palate was as well, with lemon chiffon, pineapple, and green apple. I was expecting brioche flavors – it said so in the tasting notes – but they were only mild, more of an undertone than a prominent flavor. Don’t be mistaken, La Pluma Brut IS a dry wine – just a dry wine that doesn’t quite know that it’s dry, especially on the finish of lemon and green apple. So it may not be quite the bone-dry palate one expects from a Brut, it is pleasantly crisp and lively, with a fruitiness that is delightful without being sweet. A good start from IGT, and a reason to celebrate.
