Wine Advent-ure: Day 17

Secrets Revealed

Country: Portugal

For Day 17 we try Secrets Revealed, a not-so-clandestine offering from Portugal. According to Costco’s tasting notes (from aroundtheworldinwines.com) Portugal has had a vibrant wine scene that has been “under the radar” for centuries, with its dry wines being a closely guarded secret. As someone who enjoys Ports and various Douro wines from the country (not to mention a recent Portuguese white featured in this blog), I always thought of Portugal as wine country so the thought of it being under the radar was kind of a surprise.

Secrets Revealed is a dry red blend, bright yet bold with flavors of blackberries, dark cherries, raspberries, pomegranate and wood. The wine’s high acidity makes it lively and the grippy tannins provide an assertive structure and needed balance to the fruit. It has a long dark cherry finish that satisfies. Full bodied and voluptuous with the strength of a Cabernet Sauvignon and the boldness of a Syrah, this “secret agent” of wines can hold its own against protein-centric dishes, like steak, burgers and portobello dishes. Definitely a wine that does not lack for excitement.
