Wine Advent-ure: Day 16

Old World Players

Region/Country: Western Cape/South Africa
Grape Varietal: Chenin Blanc

Pineapple, pear, melon, honeysuckle, peach – this Chenin Blanc from South Africa has it all. Chenin Blanc may be a cousin to the more popular (at least in my experience) Sauvignon Blanc, but I always found Chenin Blanc to be more expressive and complex, and South Africa does a good job of making Chenin Blanc shine. Made from grapes grown near the Atlantic Coast, Costco refers to this wine as a “beach babe”, with the sun exposure and cool maritime winds from the Atlantic combining to give the grapes fruitiness and vibrancy. Old World Players is a full-bodied white with lively acidity and mineral undertones supporting its fruity flavors and aromas. While I’m trying this “beach babe” in the winter, this sexy wine naturally makes for a great summer enjoyment, as an accompaniment to seafood or as the ever-classic porch pounder.
